Gorgeous hidden gem of a park/arboretum a little past Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. It is a small, privately owned park but free and open to the public. The park is very clean and well managed. There are no public bathrooms, trash cans, or sidewalks, and the pastoral lands look more beautiful and clean for it. Even when visiting out of tulip season April-May, there were still many gorgeous trees to look at, as well as admiring the historic buildings on site and bordering the park. The place is very ideal for a quick walk or sunny picnic day out. Highly recommend

Beautiful park to experience any time of year. I came for a midday walk in the fall and enjoyed my time reflecting and walking around in nature peacefully.

Such a riot of color! The park was ablaze with pinks, reds, yellows… A perfect spot for our picnic! The trees gave a welcome relief from the mid-day sun and the lush grass was better than a carpet beneath our toes! This darling, private park puts on a superb display each spring as the tulips, hyacinths, alliums, and daffodils all jostle for attention in the many lovely beds scattered throughout. Make it a new family tradition to walk the floral displays and soak in the warm sunshine. You won’t regret it!

Want to see a beautiful garden? This is the place to be in Baltimore City.
Baltimore City has a lot of hidden gems. This is probably one of those places. I was amazed to see how well it kept. We saw Tulips and many other flowers I don’t even know the name of. It’s the perfect place to take your kids and the family. You can do some photoshoots as well.

Beautiful and very peaceful park close to downtown Baltimore City.
An A+ spot for picnics and studying for students who like a tranquil environment.
I find that it is a park that helps with destressing when walking through it especially with someone. It even has security parked nearby for added protection.
Finally, this is a must stop park if you are close to JHU or JHH.

Great neighborhood garden center. Purchased all the perennials for my garden a few years back and still growing beautifully. Had some unique finds as well. Staff is also super friendly and helpful ♥️

Stopped in because I was looking for fig trees. They had multiple types to choose from. Was able to get a pair of nice trees. Also some soil improvement for planting them. For the size of the location they have a lot of varieties from small annuals, vegetables plants, bushes, and trees. Id say the only draw back here is they are not the cheapest place. But hopefully they will be great healthy trees that last years.
sarcipius57

Nice plants and other garden related stuff. They also have few pond and aquatic plants.
Not for poor people though:)
More on the expensive side

Love the native plants available here of all different styles and sizes. I also like that i can find some great landscaping cover here too, like pine bark nuggets and attractive red stone gravel. Excellent service too!

I love Poor Boys! I’ve been coming here for years. They always have a great selection and even better prices. Plus they have a rewards program! Everyone is always friendly and helpful.

Scientific Plant Service was recommended by a friend and our homeowner’s association for evaluation and treatment of our crepe myrtle trees. They were very responsive in coming out to look at our tree and provided a timely recommendation and estimate to treat the bark scale.
They scheduled treatment very soon after sending the estimate.
Communication with Scientific Plant Service staff was excellent and answered my questions in a very satisfactory and professional manner.
Our crepe Myrtle seems to be doing well.
Thank you.

Many years ago we used Scientific Plant Service to save our giant oak trees. They came out, without fail, to spray annually until the gypsy caterpillars finally died out. When we noticed something odd going on this fall, with those same oaks, we immediately thought of Scientific Plant Service. Nick came out within days of my contacting them to examine our five oaks, as well as two young tulip poplars at my daughter’s home close by. Within a few days I received an email with our proposal and all costs. Nick even priced the trees out individually in case we couldn’t afford the total expense all at once. He also noted which trees should be the first to get our attention. I had some difficulty printing one of the pages and I called Lisa, their customer service representative and we resolved the problem. This company is trustworthy and efficient. I highly recommend them.
Update: Matt came out on Monday morning to feed our five oaks. He was friendly and efficient and we look forward to working with him again in the future.
Joy Richardson

Nick from Scientific Plant Service came out on Monday and examined my pines which create a privacy fence around my backyard. They were not thriving and needed attention. I was not aware that I needed to have them serviced. He was very patient and explained fully what needed to be done to keep them healthy. I highly recommend their services. They are professional and financially friendly.

After having been disappointed and disillusioned by the rest, we finally found the ABSOLUTE BEST in lawn and landscape care. From the day that I called Scientific Plant Service to inquire about their service several years ago, their customer service (in every facet of their business) has been second to none! Kevin Nickle is truly incredible. I trust that when he comes out to assess our property, I’ll get a detailed and honest assessment of what we need (and don’t need) to keep our property beautiful and healthy. Every single technician that has been to our home has provided service that is WAY above expectation. Don’t hesitate to contact Scientific Plant Service today!
Judi Komins

Their office staff consistently provides exceptional service, care, and attention to the individuals who carry out the tasks. I had nothing but weeds, Japanese stilt grass, and major bald spots on my lawn. It’s not 100% perfect, but it’s close to how I envisioned my grass to look. In a few more years, I am confident we’ll get there by following their recommendations and treatment plan! Thanks, SPS team, for the great work

Customer Reviews
BEWARE! DO NOT USE! The first picture was provided to us by LawnStarter claiming our grass was 6 inches or longer and they charged us a $25 fee on top of the normal $50 cut fee. As you can clearly see the grass is NOT over 6 inches. The other two pictures show how the company they assigned to us left clumps of grass in one spot and killed our grass. My husband just mowed tonight and in normal mowing situations clumps don’t congregate like that. This company is a middle man and does not actually ever see your yard for themselves. They hire other companies to do the work and take their word for it being done correctly and completely. Their customer service is AWFUL! They do not care about their customers satisfaction. They refuse to refund me $25 for hiring a crew that clearly lies. I filed a complaint with the BBB as well. Please save yourself the headache and aggravation and DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY!! Once I read the other reviews, I understand why I’m getting the treatment that I am now.
Julie Everhart

This is not a lawn care company. This company does not cut any grass or do any work in your yard. They should advertise and market their services honestly and correctly not misleading. They hire other companies to do the actual work. After paying them they have the audacity to charge more $ for themselves even though they are not doing any extra work. They don’t seem to care about work being done or the company they hire to do it.
Heritage Cuts & Salon

Terrible experience trying to schedule a mow. We had 3 no shows, then resulting with 4 reschedules. The only person to come out only took a picture of an area with long grass to provide that estimate. No one from the corporate level ever responded to comments about the issue. Only changes was a different provider was assigned who also no showed.
Alexander Lucas

This is the first time I ever used any form of lawn service in the 20 years of renting in the last year of owning my own home. Always did the work myself but as I got older and could not do it anymore I was reluctant to use any form of lawn service. But I gave them a shot and the outcome is outstanding! Very affordable very reliable and what I mean by reliable is they keep in contact with you when they are going to show up. I am very relieved that my yard looks beautiful and the service is great. Please consider giving this company a shot and you will not be disappointed I hope. Is looking for a good person I would recommend Leonard
Solange Dougherty Hibbard

I wish I’d read the recent reviews prior to booking. They spend more time on fancy apps and creating this illusion of a well organized company than on actually getting the job done. I hired them on a Thursday and was promised they’d arrive Friday. Then I was told it was a 3 day window, then they said Monday. I just got an email from them that they are unable to complete the service. I really needed the yard work performed in a timely manner and I emphasized that. These people have wasted 4 days of my time. They are middlemen but they don’t disclose. They have no real control over how to get the jobs done. You’re better off hiring an independent contractor.

I have driven past this intersection of Falls Road & Northern Parkway a gazillion times and never knew this was place nestled here hiding in plain sites. Early Saturday morning visits to nurseries is becoming a thing of mine lately and it’s so calming. This place is not huge, but it’s quaint and packs a punch with its variety. I loved walking through and looking at all of the plants, trees and accessories that they have. I was told that it can be a bit pricey but I did not feel that way. It could be that I went while they were having their half off summer sale but a lot of the items were decently priced in my opinion. I have become low key obsessed with the Alocasia/Colocasia species since my visit to Bali last year and towards the end of my visits I spotted some nice ones on the outside of the gate, I walked outside and around and noticed that they were planted there as a part of the landscape and not in buckets for sale I did ask the staff if they sold them and I was directed to an area where there were a few left but none looking like the variety planted out front. Looking for an Alocasia Diamond Head and I am sure I come across one at some point. The staff were friendly and I enjoyed my visit. To be that close to a busy intersection, it surprisingly still felt like I travelled far out for this visit.

A little bit more expensive than lowes and Home Depot. But it’s near my home. My variegated pearl strings was dead after I bought it home for several days. So sad. They have many cute cactus

One of my fave local places to get plants. This is the only local garden center I know of that isn’t a Lowe’s or Home Depot according to google. It’s close to home, sells seeds all year long(great for my Aerogarden), always helpful staff to answer questions

Every trip to Greenfield nursery is an adventure, and the cool thing about this adventure is that there’s always a guide to help you along the way. If you know what you’re looking for, they’ve got it. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, they’ve got that too. We always experience tremendous friendliness, unparalleled customer service, and even more important very knowledgeable workers who can tell you exactly what plants will work for you where and when and how to take care of them. You can’t be going to this place, which is why we always go back. If you go there once, it’ll be your go to for plants or planting needs of any kind ever more.
Just went again today, and once again, the best choice around.
scott meek

Really love this place! Expensive to some degree but it is expected when purchasing relatively expensive, well-groomed flora. Unfortunately when my bestfriend and I went, it was cicada season so we suffered a bit whilst outdoors. Lots of gorgeous, favourable plants & the little greenhouse? So cute and such a good overall atmosphere. If you’re not planning on buying some plants, I recommend checking this place out anyways as it’s such a cute little spot with nice people who work there 🙂

Didn’t buy anything but, it was a great experience. I wish they had more electronic type vendors. Only advice is to improve the storefront appearance. Don’t get me wrong, it had a great sign and banner outfront with the different vendor’s logos displayed on it, but I think the overall look and feel of the storefront was boring and offputting. They could easily grab everyone that walks by the area for business with simply adding a permanent sign that highlights their logo and brand. I’d be glad to assist with the sign and logo design. As well as advertising around the area more.
Justin Allen

Everyone here is great – so many amazing volunteers and people in the community, and they are all so welcoming. I feel like I’m actually a part of a neighborhood.

Lovely and welcoming place! At the front is the community gardens where plots can be rented. At the back is the free farm itself, where volunteers help run both the farms and the greenhouse where seedlings are grown for future plantings.

Maxalea just completed planting a dozen new trees on the campus of my retirement community, a job costing on the order of $10K. They submitted the least expensive, but most comprehensive proposal of the four that were solicited; and in scoping out the job that they were to bid on, they sent not just one, but two knowledgeable professionals to clearly understand the job to be done. They came when they said they would and did a very professional job; they went the extra mile! The three attached photos show three of the trees they planted; two have deer fencing and one is just staked, being in an area not frequented by deer. I recommend them wholeheartedly.
Stan Wilson

We’ve worked with Maxalea for over ten years and have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Jim McWilliams. Our most recent job involved removing parts of large, old bushes which straddled the property line between our yard and our next-door neighbor’s property. We wanted to remove all parts of bushes on our side; our neighbor wanted his portion of bushes to remain. Jim and his team approached what could have been a prickly situation with a positive and professional manner. Jim remained on site while our portion of bushes were removed to ensure that the property line was clearly marked and followed. Several pieces of equipment were used—chain saw, hand saw, various shovels, and ultimately, chains and a work truck. The job was a success! Our neighbor’s portion of bushes remains; our portion is gone. Thank you, Jim and crew! You are great to work with!
Denise K.

Maxalea has completed three installations here in the last 18 months, including several trees in each stop, and stonework. I’m satisfied.
Landscaping is more than finding a tree to be plunked in dirt. It’s climate, physics, commercial availability, office coordination, a knowledgeable installation team, quite a bit of hard work, terrific soil, and weather luck. Of course, there’s probably more.
Most importantly to me, though, is the satisfaction in matching the trees and shrubs to the lay of the land, to have a collaboration between the Maxalea team and myself, to exercise a little control and make the final decision on tree selection and placement, and then to end the day with enjoyment and satisfaction in the finished product, thinking of how this will all grow together, and grow up with me and my surrounding community.
Maxalea has done a very good job, and I will look forward to seeing them here in the future.

Have you ever had your landscapers show up, knock on your door, get keys, and then notice later that day they didn’t touch your yard? With Maxeala, that can be your regular interaction with your landscapers.
The first time it happened I had to make 6 calls to get them to do me a ‘favor’ by coming back a week and a half later. In a bit of foreshadowing, the week and a half, was their improved offer, after I told them waiting a month was fine, I’ll just post a picture of my yard as it was in a review here.
The next time the exact same thing happened, Sandy the sales rep who gave her personal assurance it was resolved couldn’t be bothered because she was on vacation.
Eventually I spoke with the owner who was flabbergasted that spending 3 hours on the phone to deal with, a now recurring, issue, would leave a customer dissatisfied.
Needless to say he assured me that I’d receive some sort of compensation for their back to back no shows, while actually at the property (asked me for the sally port key). That didn’t happen.
So if you want to spend hours on the phone to have your landscapers show up a week late, and then be indignant that you are upset about the situation, while offering no compensation other than they delayed performance of some (not all) of their contracted services, this company is for you.
Needless to say this is the worst experience I have ever had with a landscaping company, and am currently working to replace them for next season. I recommend you look elsewhere.
If they ever provide any compensation, as promised by the owner, I’ll update this review accordingly. So far we are at $0, at a cost of about 10 phone calls (most of them at their request and urging) and a minimum of 4 hours on the phone, getting pin-balled around their organization. Definitely the convenience, I was looking for when I signed a contract to spend thousands on regular landscaping.
There were several smaller issues before this, but after this season I cannot, in good conscience rely on this company or recommend them to others.
Sandy did reach out after seeing this review. Their response was to request I get on the phone with them. As I’ve been on the phone for a total in excess of 4 hours for these issues, I initially declined. When I did call, I wish I hadn’t, it seems clear their only motivation was getting this review removed, not you know actually delivering on any of their assurances.
Since they’ve been flippant about this whole saga, and in full disclosure, I countered with an offer to delete this review if they refund my last 180 days of charges (the maximum duration their processor should be able to void incurred charges). I did not feel not charging me for one visit (which they had already charged to my CC, but predictably didn’t know about) was adequate for their abhorrently bad handling of my account.
I believe their performance has earned this review, so if they want to pay to take it down that’s their prerogative, but this review was initially posted after the promised timeline for a make good had already elapsed.
Had the issue been resolved in a timely manner, or without Maxeala’s indignation that I should take what services I get and be satisfied, I likely never would have posted this review and just shopped landscapers at the end of the season.
2 stars not one since the crews are decent (not great) when they do show up. If it drops to one star they either blocked my driveway again or knocked to ask for a key.
Michael M

Maxalea has been my go to landscaper all my adult life. Stellar service, intuitive design and great trees, shrubs and plants as well as hardscaping.

James knows his stuff. Great guy, friendly, knowledgeable, a true gentleman. Like many others, these last few years I’ve spent a lot of time renovating my lawn. We started using Bio-Green last fall and we couldn’t be happier! Our lawn has recovered extremely well from the “excess chemical” service from our previous provider. We are pleased to have an eco-friendly service that really works. James is great to work with – he is very responsive and provides solid advice for maintaining a beautiful lawn. Start working with him as soon as you can – you will be very pleased.

I wanted a lawn service but having a dog made me nervous about using so many chemical fertilizers, so Bio Green seemed like a great choice. James is very responsive and does great work. Both of my neighbor’s lawns are full of weeds which made it almost impossible to keep my grass looking good, but after 1.5 years my lawn is healthy and green all summer.
